One has to ask yourself all the time what happens to your hard-earned money that is paid to trade unions as membership fees on a monthly basis. Below you will find a short summary of what Solidarity does with its members’ money – if you do not belong to Solidarity, ask yourself: “What does my trade union do with my money?
As a trade union we assist and support our members in the workplace both as individual and collective members. You are probably familiar with the numerous court cases currently driven by Solidarity and the successes already achieved. The outcomes of these cases create new precedents in law which guide the fair implementation of labour legislation.
Since its establishment, the trade union has transformed itself into the Solidarity Movement which comprises 18 institutions. Below, we have pleasure in sharing a few highlights of what Solidarity and its institutions have already accomplished and are accomplishing on an ongoing basis:
- Solidarity’s organisers and legal experts handle 400 000 work-related enquiries a year.
- At any given stage, 1 200 legal matters are being processed.
- Solidarity wins 87% of its litigations.
- Approximately R200 million is paid out annually in respect of compensation for occupational injuries and diseases as well as for related court cases.
- Funeral benefits of R7, 5 million are paid out annually.
- Solidarity invests millions in training; R50 million has already been invested in Akademia.
- Solidarity members receive a 20% discount when studying through Akademia.
- Sol-Tech was established at a cost of more than R50 million.
- Sol-Tech uses only the best equipment and technology.
- Approximately 1 000 young prospective artisans are currently in training at Sol-Tech.
- The Solidarity Helping Hand Study Fund stands at R100 million.
- Study aid of R30 million has been paid out to 1 250 students.
- Study aid has been granted to 5 210 students during the past five years.
- Solidarity spends R1 million per month in the battle against racial quotas.
- Solidarity members contribute R10 per month to the Solidarity Building Fund.
- Solidarity members contribute R5 per month to the Solidarity Helping Hand Study Fund.
- AfriForum is the civil rights organisation within the Solidarity Movement and has indeed become a household name, having achieved major successes in dealing with service delivery problems in local communities and with its community policing initiatives.
