Withdraw BBBEE codes in their entirety; start over from scratch – Solidarity

Trade union Solidarity demanded this week, the last day for public comment on the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI’s) proposed new broad-based black economic empowerment (BBBEE) codes, that the proposed codes be retracted in their entirety. As a precautionary measure, Solidarity also submitted its comment in the form of a critical document on the proposed codes this week.

There is renewed uncertainty over the posts of 523 aircraft specialists at Denel Aviation/AMG, as there is still no clarity on whether or not the South African Air Force (SAAF) will use some of these technicians, given that it has cancelled its contract for aircraft maintenance with the company.

AfriForum, celebrities and families of victims of farm murders march to Minister’s Office

AfriForum this week marched from Church Square to the office of Nathi Mthethwa, the Minister of Police, with 10 families who have lost loved ones to farm murders, various celebrities and hundreds of concerned South Africans where they read a memorandum which demands the prioritisation of farm murders. The musicians who participated in the march include Steve Hofmeyr, Chris Chameleon and Adam Tas. The families include that of Attie, Wilna and little Willemien Potgieter who were murdered on their farm in Lindley on 1 December 2010. The families displayed photos of their murdered kin. Victims who survived farm attacks also joined the march.

Laerskool Danie Malan packs schoolbags with Helping Hand – Liza Brönner and Anton Botha lend a hand

The new student council of Laerskool Danie Malan in Pretoria North packed nearly 200 schoolbags for the Gauteng North region of Solidarity Helping Hand within minutes.

This primary school is one of the schools who have applied for schoolbags for needy Afrikaans Grade Ones since the beginning of the Schoolbag Project. This year the school applied for 70 schoolbags. The bags will be given to the new Grade One pupils in January 2013.

Knights and Knaves

This week’s Knight is the South African cricket team, the Proteas. This team was recently crowned the best test cricket team in the world after twice winning two consecutive series away from home, against England and Australia. The Proteas beat the Australian team by 309 runs and still had a day’s playing time left. What is more,  Ali Bacher, the former test captain, said that the Proteas were the best South African test team up to the present.

Knave
The defence force colonel (suspected of having been under the influence of liquor) who crashed into the car of a newly married couple, which led to the bride’s death, is this week’s Knave. Chantal Geldenhuys (26), née Beetge, died in the accident on the corner of Sefako Makgatho (Zambezi) en Dr Van der Merwe Avenue  in the north of Pretoria at about 01:00 on Sunday. Her husband, Louwrens Geldenhuys (31), is in a critical condition in hospital. His pelvic bone was broken in the accident and his lungs were damaged as well. The defence force colonel is reported to have driven across a red robot and then to have collided with the couple’s City Golf in his Hilux bakkie.
